  3. Why are you taking this class? • It is required. • It should be easy and fun. • It will provide the foundation for academic success. • Public speaking skills = $$ • People have changed the world with their words…You can too!

  4. What is Public Speaking? • Defined as: “1 : The act or process of making speeches in public 2 : The art of effective oral communication with an audience” (Merriam-Webster Online, 2008) • Similar to and distinct from conversational speaking.

  5. What is Your Biggest Fear? • #5- Heights • #4- Darkness • #3- Spiders • #2- Death • #1- Public Speaking (SUPRISE!)

  6. Nervousness is OK! • EVERYBODY gets nervous while speaking. • 76% of experienced speakers have nervousness before speaking. (24% are liars) • Nervousness is good! • You will live.

  7. Dealing with Nervousness • Experience! • Prepare and practice. • Think positively! • Visualize success. • You are more nervous than you seem. • You won’t be perfect- that is OK!

  8. Close your eyes and BREATHE! Eye contact with specific people. Nail the intro. Focus on the content, not the audience. Humor = great equalizer. You are better than everyone. Visual aids divert attention. Picture audience in their underwear. Specific Tips for Combating Nervousness
