  3. GENERAL SAFETY RULES • Identify potential hazards • Alert other people to hazards • Learn practices that reduce the risks of hazards • Never take unnecessary risks • Always use personal protective equipment • Keep equipment in good condition • Know the steps to take in case of an emergency • Always follow safe practices • Read and follow instructions

  4. CHEMICAL HAZARDS • Some water quality chemicals are hazardous • Always use safety glasses when using chemical test kits

  5. LIVE ANIMAL HAZARDS • Redclaw crawfish have strong claws and sharp spines…handle with care! • Beware of snakes, spiders, fire ants, and stinging insects • Be sure to inform teacher if you are allergic to any of the above

  6. WATER HAZARDS • Do not go near the outdoor pond if you can’t swim • Do not go near the outdoor pond alone if the greenhouse is closed up for winter • Do not run or jump off of the pier • The pier has a ladder on each end; do not try to climb out on land if you fall in the pond

  7. ELECTRICAL HAZARDS • Water and electricity DO NOT MIX! • All electrical outlets in the greenhouses have ground-fault interrupters and circuit breakers but keep them dry • Never plug in a device with a wet plug • Do not use any power tool around water or standing on a metal ladder

  8. HEAT HAZARDS • Greenhouses are equipped with natural gas heaters that put out a lot of heat (200,000 BTUs) and they get HOT! • Tanks are equipped with 1800 watt water heaters and they get extremely HOT! • Leave water heaters under water for at least 5 minutes after unplugging…they stay hot for a long time

  9. BEHAVIOR / CONDUCT • Absolutely NO horseplay allowed • Do not run, chase, or push another student • Do not throw rocks, coins, or anything else into a tank or the outdoor pond • Do not attempt to capture lizards, frogs, tadpoles, or any other live animal

  10. BEHAVIOR / CONDUCT • If you are not actively involved in a class activity, you are to remain seated at the picnic tables • Do not write, draw, scratch, or otherwise mark on picnic tables, tanks, or anything else at these facilities • Violation of any rules may result in you being banned from the outside facilities
