9. Electricity • What is an electric current? • An electric current is the flow of electrons through a material • An ampere or amp (A): The amount of charge that passes through the wire in a unit of time is the rate at which the electric current flows

18. Electric Circuits • Remember, electron currents cannot flow through just any material • Conductors: materials in which electrons move freely • Insulators: materials in which electrons cannot move freely Check out which materials are conductor and insulators

19. Electric Circuits • In a conductor, some of the electrons are only loosely bound to their atoms • EX: metals, copper, silver, aluminum • In an insulator, the electrons are bound tightly to their atoms and do not flow easily • EX: plastic, rubber, glass, wood

20. Electric Circuits • Resistors: as charges flow through a circuit the pass through resistors. • Resistors use electrical energy as they interfere with or resist the flow of charge

29. ELECTROMAGNETS REVISITED Electromagnets are made of coils of wire with electricity passing through them. Moving charges create magnetic fields, so when the coils of wire in an electromagnet have an electric current passing through them, the coils behave like a magnet.
