  3. Social dialects • Dialects are simply linguistic varieties which are distinguish able by their vocabulary , grammar , and prouounciation the speech of people from different social as well as regional group may differ in these ways.

  4. Standard English • The dialect we grace with the name standard English is spoken with many different accents. • American standard English is distinguishable from ausrtraline standard English for instance and both differ from the British standard dialects

  5. Caste dialects • People can be grouped together on the basis of similar social economic factors . • There are caste system determined by birth and strict social rules govern the kind of behaviour appropriate to each group

  6. Social class dialects • The term social class is used here as a shorthand for difference between people which are associated with differences in social prestige wealth and education • Example : bank manager do not talk like office cleaners , lawyers so not speak in the same way as the burglars the defend

  7. Grammatical patterns: • Past tense verb forms ( I finished that book yesterday). • Present tense verb forms ( Rose walks to school every day) • Negative forms ( Nobody don’t want no chips).

  8. Pronunciation Pronunciation refers to the ability to use the correct stress, rhythm and intonation of a word in a spoken language. A word can be spoken in different ways by various individuals or groups, depending on many factors, such as: the area in which they grew up, the area in which they now live, their ethnic group, their social class, or their education.

Examples of Social Dialects in England 1-Words that initiate with 'h‘: Two types of pronunciations for 'h' in words such as 'house' - [h] or Ø The rate of 'h' omission in world initials increase as we go lower in social class ( Comparison between social class and the rate of 'h' omission)page 143

  10. 2- 'r' that comes behind a vowel :Two types of pronunciations in 'r' in worlds such as 'car' or 'cart' - [r] or Ø People of high social class have the tendency to omit the sound 'r' behind a vowel pronouncing the letter r in the city of New York is considered as a prestigious feature, but the opposite is true in London.
