The Hive Project focuses on developing an intelligent robotic system capable of identifying and repairing imperfections in a controlled environment. Utilizing a black surface with various spots as imperfections, this system will employ multiple inspection robots that communicate via beacons to pinpoint areas needing attention. By decoupling inspection and repair tasks, we aim to enhance efficiency; inspection robots can efficiently locate issues, while a dedicated repair robot addresses the identified imperfections, optimizing both processes.

The Task • The robot system will find and repair imperfections in a controlled environment • The environment in this task will be a black surface with white or colored spots as imperfections • Robots will use beacons to communicate where imperfections are found
Applications – Conceptual Goals • One goal of this project is to demonstrate the concept of decoupling inspection and repair tasks • Robots are much better at cheaply inspecting environments, but repair can often be expensive and mechanically complex • Multiple simple inspection robots can scan an environment and flag areas for repair, and one repair robot can perform repairs
