  3. The Elizabethan Settlement • Upon Mary’s death, Henry’s daughter Elizabeth takes the throne • Passes a series of reforms known as Elizabethan settlement • Preserved Catholic ritual • Changed the Latin mass to English • Results? • England firmly Protestant

  4. Catholic Reformation • Led by Pope Paul III • Sometimes known as “Counter-Reformation” • Goal – Revive the moral authority of the church

  5. Council of Trent 1545 Met off and on for 20 years Salvation comes through faith and good works Established schools Stiff penalties for corruption

  6. Empowering the Inquisition • Inquisition – Church court • Prepared “Index of Forbidden Books” • Too immoral or irreligious for Catholics to read

  7. Founding of the Jesuits • 1540 • Pope recognized the Society of Jesus • Ignatius of Loyola • Set up schools • Missions spread all over the world
