  2. What does category D mean? Our school has significant weaknesses in a few areas: • ATTENDANCE • SELF-EVALUATION • STANDARDS

  3. ATTENDANCE • Use regular opportunities to emphasize the importance of good attendance with pupils and parents • Target (with attendance officers) those pupils whose attendance is unsatisfactory • Involve the School Council in ideas to improve attendance and punctuality Attendance Data 2009-2010 = 90.5 2010-2011 = 91.3 2011-2012 = 91.2

  4. Self-evaluation Continue to improve the impact of self-evaluation by… • Ensure the School Evaluation Report has greater impact on key improvement areas • Set sharper targets for improvement and monitor closely

  5. standards In Foundation Phase… • Literacy, Language and Communication (reading, writing, speaking/listening) • Mathematical Development • Personal, Social Development In Juniors (Key Stage 2)… • Literacy (reading, writing, speaking/listening) • Numeracy (maths) • Science

  9. Higher standards since Sept 2010

  10. every school is different… • Bryn Hafod has significantly more children requiring individual support for Special Educational Needs (SEN) than most schools • We have significantly more children with Statements for SEN than most schools • Every year group at Bryn Hafod is different; for example, our current Year 6 includes 5 children in our Special Needs Resource Base • These are NOT excuses – we need to improve further and faster

  11. VALUE ADDED RESULTS 2012

  12. What changes have we made? • We have introduced “Big Maths” across the school • We have started teaching the wider curriculum through “Cornerstones” • Our focus on Literacy and Numeracy is sharper than ever • We are tracking pupil progress through “Incerts”

  13. BIG maths • Big Maths is fun and gives children confidence • It is designed to teach basic number skills • Children take part in weekly tests to ensure progress • The same approach is used across the school • It is proven to raise achievement in maths

  14. cornerstones The Four Cornerstones of Learning: • Engage – trips, visitors, inside and outside • Develop – knowledge, understanding, skills • Innovate – applying their learning • Express - sharing learning in a variety of ways Writing skills are applied throughout every Cornerstones Project

  15. Incerts • An on-line system to track every single pupil in every single subject • Links to key skills in all areas • Evidence can be attached using any mobile device • Targets are set to ensure that good progress is made • Over half the primary schools in Wales are now using Incerts
