Characterization • A method an author uses to develop the character • Direct: An author directly states the character’s traits (personality/physical) • Indirect: An author does not directly state the character’s traits (personality/physical), but implies the traits through actions, thoughts, words, and interactions with other characters

  3. Setting • The time and place a story takes place • There may be more than one

  4. Plot • The sequence of events in a story

  5. Plot Diagram • Exposition • Rising Action: Actions that lead to the climax *Central Conflict- base problem/struggle that no other conflict could exist without, *conflict- struggles internal and external, and *complications- areas that prevent the resolution • Climax: the turning point of the story/usually most intense part • Falling Action: Events leading to the resolution • Resolution: The solution or end result of the problem (can be directly give or implied)

  6. Before Reading • Think about India’s modern culture in the story! • Think about Venkat’s traditional (family) values that are conflicted with India’s modern values.
