2 … YOU can make the dream real! The Beat Goes On Marching Band (TBGO) invites you to be part of our Shanghai experience – share a bit of Portland with China On the evening of September 13, 2014 The Beat Goes On Marching Band (TBGO) will march, swagger, and strut down Huaihai Road in front of hundreds of thousands of parade watchers to open the 25th Shanghai Tourism Festival. With a theme of “marching bands,” this year’s Festival brings marching bands from around the world to Shanghai. The grand opening parade is attended by numerous Chinese dignitaries as well as officers of foreign consulates in Shanghai and is broadcast live on television and radio, reaching an audience of 200 million people. The Festival runs throughout the week, drawing 9 million local and international visitors to its events. TBGO will perform at two to three of these Festival events (in addition to the opening parade) and will be the sole band representing the United States. With members that range in age from 20’s to 80’s, The Beat Goes On is not a typical marching band. Eschewing military precision, TBGO emphasizes fun, crowd interaction, and music that appeals to all generations: We may be a marching band, but we’d rather play Lady Gaga than John Phillip Sousa! The band’s infectious energy makes it a crowd favorite wherever we perform, and that sense of pure joy invariably lights up the crowd as we come down the street with dance team, color guard, and a large twirling squad amplifying the color and excitement.
3 While this will be the band’s first trip to Asia, it’s far from our first major event. Augmenting numerous events in the Portland Metro area, TBGO has appeared at Seattle Seafair; the Vancouver (BC) Christmas Parade; Pendleton Round-Up; in Nassau, Bahamas; and multiple venues at the Calgary Stampede, including a breakfast hosted by the Premier of Alberta. In 2013 TBGO became the first marching band to open a session of the Oregon Legislature. In addition to Shanghai, our 2014 schedule includes the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade and the Bristol (Rhode Island) Fourth of July Parade, the oldest such celebration in America dating back to 1785. As the sole band from the United States, TBGO is likely to garner attention in Shanghai. We believe TBGO’s blend of unusual membership, exciting music, and contagious exuberance will leave a memorable impression on our live and broadcast audiences. TBGO is investing its resources in this adventure and our members are adding their personal funds – but that alone won’t be enough. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT. We hope your organization will associate itself with this unique opportunity by helping to defray TBGO’s travel expenses. In exchange, we will proudly recognize your organization’s support at our Shanghai appearances and in the U.S. throughout the 2014 performance season (25+ events) and do our best to make you feel that you’re part of the experience.
