  1. Respiratory Disorders

  2. sinusitis – inflammation of mucous membrane of paranasal sinuses • common cold – viral infection • causes inflammation of membranes • swelling and production of mucus • blockage of sinus openings; mucus accumulates • can lead to bacterial infections • treatment: symptoms only • antibiotics if bacterial

  3. asthma – reduced air flow in terminal ends of bronchioles • pleurisy – inflammation of pleural cavity • painful – 2 layers of mucosa become rough and rub together • pneumothorax – air in pleural cavity • Wall of cavity broken so pressure changes. • Lungs collapse. • bronchitis – inflammation of bronchi • caused by irritants • swelling of mucous membrane of bronchi • can progress to emphysema

  4. emphysema – destruction of alveolar walls • COPD – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • inflammation of bronchioles • narrowing of bronchioles • restricts air movement • air stays in lungs • symptoms: shortness of breath, enlargement of thoracic cavity • treatment: no cure; drugs can slow progress.

  5. cystic fibrosis – inherited disease • affects secretory cells in lining of lungs, pancreas, sweat and salivary glands • decreased chlorine ion flow from cells • Lungs become dehydrated. • thicker mucus • Patients live only into early adulthood. • SIDS – sudden infant death syndrome • crib death • most frequent cause of death of infants between 2 weeks and 1 year of age • Baby stops breathing during sleep.

  6. strep throat – inflammation of larynx • sometimes affects tonsils and middle ear • whooping cough – pertussis • bacterial infection • causes loss of cilia • accumulations of mucus • TB – tuberculosis • Bacteria forms small lump-like lesions that contain bacteria. • rupture: more bacteria spreads

  7. pneumonia – lung infection • viral or bacterial • inflammation – pulmonary edema • symptoms: fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain • flu – respiratory infection • symptoms: chills, fever, headache, muscle aches and respiratory symptoms • viral – no easy remedy • flu shot

  8. lung cancer – affects epithelial cells of respiratory tract • most common cause of cancer death in US • easily spreads to other parts of body • symptoms: coughing, sputum production, blockage of airways
