emphysema – destruction of alveolar walls • COPD – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease • inflammation of bronchioles • narrowing of bronchioles • restricts air movement • air stays in lungs • symptoms: shortness of breath, enlargement of thoracic cavity • treatment: no cure; drugs can slow progress.
cystic fibrosis – inherited disease • affects secretory cells in lining of lungs, pancreas, sweat and salivary glands • decreased chlorine ion flow from cells • Lungs become dehydrated. • thicker mucus • Patients live only into early adulthood. • SIDS – sudden infant death syndrome • crib death • most frequent cause of death of infants between 2 weeks and 1 year of age • Baby stops breathing during sleep.
