Deuteronomy 17:14-20 Laws Fit For A King
1st Three Laws - Prohibitive • He Shall Not Multiply Horses For Himself • Key phrase: “shall not… for himself” • The point: should not build up his own forces • God is saying, “Let me provide for you!” • He Shall Not Multiply Wives For Himself • Why? “Lest his heart turn away” • He Shall Not Greatly Increase Silver & Gold • Key idea: Trust God! • 1 Kings 10:24 – 11:4, 11

2nd Three Laws - Imperative • Write For Himself A Copy of the Law • Read It All the Days of His Life • Read it, learn it, and live it! • Carefully Observe All the Words of the Law • Obedience naturally follows familiarity with Truth • Application • David had intimate knowledge of scripture (Ps. 1) • Have your own copy! • Read, study, and live!
Why Follow Them? • Humility • Trusting in God and giving ourselves to His will • Focus • Fellowship with His word that helps us hear and obey • Posterity • It is good for our families • We must lead by example!
