  3. We are going to learn about the lives of three prominent people in the 18th century.We will read about Sir Isaac Newton together.When we have finished, you will need to explain:- His successes- His difficulties- What his life tells us about the 18th century (1700s)

  4. Add the dates he was alive, at least two successes and two failures, and what his life tells you about the world he lived in

  5. Now, in pairs, read about Dr Samuel Johnson together.When you have finished, add to your timeline:- His successes- His difficulties- What his life tells us about the 18th century (1700s)

  6. Finally, in pairs, read about Duchess Georgiana Cavendish.When you have finished, add to your timeline:- Her successes- Her difficulties- What her life tells us about the 18th century (1700s)

What can three lives reveal about Britain 1688-1783?As we talk, see if you can add more to the three columns on the right of your sheet. • What problems/difficulties people faced? • What people were worried about? • What opportunities people had? • What things CHANGED? • What things were constant throughout the period?

  8. Complete the DictionaryOur dictionary is incomplete. Using Newton’s life story, we are going to come up with definitions for these three words: • Monarchy • Parliament • Government These definitions are accurate in 1688. However, over the course of the next 100 years, they will change. After we have learned about what happened, we will revisit these definitions and see how they have changed and explain why.
