  1. Writing Essays (Or, how NOT to just sit and stare at a blank piece of paper)

  2. Objective: We will write an expository essay with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion.

  3. Two Types of Writing Narrative: Tells a story Expository: Gives information

  4. The Five Elements of Expository Writing Organization is the key Topic Sentences and thesis statements are the heart Transitions are the glue Examples, evidence, and explanations are the meat Conclusions tie it all together

  5. Example: Life is Good (An essay about the book Tuck Everlasting) When I read Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, I was forced to think about life, death and the possibility of living forever. First, I learned that life is a good thing, and I shouldn‘tspend time thinking about dying. I also realized that I wouldn’t be really happy living forever. Life is like a wheel, and if I lived forever, I would see things change but I would not change. Finally, I saw that death is not so bad. When a person dies, it’s like the world is going a step further, moving on, and developing new things. Before I read this book, I was afraid to die, but now I believe it’s not anything to be afraid of. Organization

  6. So, how do I write a solid, well-organized essay?

  7. Go with a topic (subject of your essay) Use a graphic organizer! Slow Down and give some details Stop and explain; give examples Go Back and remind your reader of your topic

  15. Even though I’m not a kid anymore, I still enjoy having a birthday party. I enjoy birthday parties for two basic reasons. I like the presents and the food. First of all, I’m excited to open my presents. The wrapping paper and ribbons can be so beautiful, and I love to speculate about what’s inside. I like getting surprises. I can hardly wait to rip open the paper to see what’s underneath. Of course, I can’t wait to eat the cake and other food. My favorite birthday treat is black forest chocolate cake and cherry vanilla ice cream. I especially like the cherries inside the cake itself. Despite the fact that I’ve been an adult for a while now, birthday parties are definitely fun. I’ll admit it, I like getting presents and eating cake. Celebrating with my friends and family always makes me feel special. Birthday Parties
