  1. Chemical Reactions… It’s like the mafia…just when you think you are done they keep pulling you back in…

  2. There are six major types of chemical reactions that can take place.

  3. Synthesis – two simple compounds come together and form a more complex compound. • General formula: A + B  AB • Example: (Iron + Sulfur yields Iron Sulfide) • A B AB • Fe + S  FeS It’s also kind of like a marriage…can I have some volunteers?

  4. Decomposition: A complex molecule breaks down to make simpler ones. • General formula: AB  A + B • Example: Electrolysis breaks water down into hydrogen and oxygen gas • A B A B • 2 H20  2 H2 + 02 It’s kind of like a divorce…can I have some more volunteers?

  5. Single Displacement: an element trades places with another element in a compound. • General formula: A + BC AC + B • Example: Magnesium replaces hydrogen in hydrochloric acid to make magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. • A BCA C B • Mg + 2 HCl  MgCl2 + H2 It’s kind of like dancers switching partners…any volunteers?

  6. Double Displacement: Parts of two different molecules switch places forming two entirely new molecules. • General Formula: AB + CDAD + CB • Example: Lead nitrate mixed with potassium iodide. • A B CDA DC B • Pb(NO3)2 + 2 KI  PbI2 + 2 KNO3 It’s kind of like changing hats…or swapping candy – any volunteers?

  7. Combustion : Oxygen combines with a compound to form H2O and CO2 + heat. • General equation: CxHx + O2 H20 + CO2 • Example: Ethyl Alcohol and oxygen produce water and carbon dioxide and heat • C2H5OH + 3 O2  3 H20 + 2 CO2 Does anyone want to try it?

  8. Acid – Base: Special double replacement when the H of the acid switches with the OH of the base to form water and salt. • General formula: HA + BOH BA + H20 • Example: Hydrobromic acid mixed with sodium hydroxide. • HA BOHB AH20 • HBr + NaOH  NaBr + H2O I don’t need volunteers for this one.

  9. Shall we practice? • Step one – write in your A’s and B’s etc. above the equation. • H2 + O2 H20 • Step two – compare the A’s and B’s to your chart to see which reaction it is… It’s like a marriage - elements come together just like people do! A B A B If you said Synthesis you are correct sir or madam!

  10. Try another one… • Step one – write in your A’s and B’s etc. above the equation. • Zn + H2SO4 ZnSO4 +H2 • Step two – compare the A’s and B’s to your chart to see which reaction it is… It’s like switching dance partners…Zinc asks “May I have this dance Hydrogen?” A B C A C B If you said Single Replacement you are correct sir or madam!

  11. And three is a charm… • Step one – write in your A’s and B’s etc. above the equation. • AgNO3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO3 • Step two – compare the A’s and B’s to your chart to see which reaction it is… It’s like trading a hat or a piece of candy. Would you like my Laffy Taffy? I would like yours. A B C D A D C B If you said double replacement you are correct sir or madam!
