Instrument :specification of a type of project that can be financially supported Participant :a legal entity contributing to the project and having rights and obligations with regard to the Community under the terms of the contract. E.g. - enterprises - research institutions - universities - public administrations - organisations that possess specific competence in management - potential users or other stakeholders Legal entities will be primarily organisations active in the research and innovation fields.

  3. TYPES OF INSTRUMENTS • Specific Targeted Research Project(STREP) • Specific Support Action(SSA) • Coordination Action(CA) • Marie Curie Actions ------------------------------------------------------------------ • Integrated Projects(IP) • Networks of Excellence(NoE)

SPECIFIC TARGETED RESEARCH PROJECT (STREP) Definition: Multipartner research, demonstration or innovation projects to support activities of a limited scope and ambition Aims and Objectives: • Increase European competitiveness • Meet the needs of society or the EU policies • Gain knowledge • Improve existing products, processes or services • Prove the suitability of new technologies Duration: 2- 3 years

  5. STREPNumber of Participants • Minimum three participants from three different Member States or Associated States (of which two must be Member States or Associated Candidate Countries) • Some calls may specify a higher minimum number of participants

SPECIFIC SUPPORT ACTION(SSA) Definition: SSA’s are service type contracts that can be used to fund events such as workshops, small conferences, studies and expert groups Aims and Objectives: • To support the implementation of FP6 • To potentially help the preparation of future Framework Programme • To stimulate, encourage and facilitate the participation of - SMEs - Small research teams - Newly developed and remote research centers - Organisations from the Candidate Countries Duration: from several months to 2-3 years Number of Participants: one or more legal entities

  7. SSA Project Alternatives The projects may cover one or a combination of the following: • Conferences • Seminars • Studies and Analysis • Working and Expert Groups • Operational Support and Dissemination • Information and Communication

COORDINATION ACTION(CA) Definition: Coordination Actions are instruments that can be used to bring together scientists to prepare for future cooperation Aims and Objectives: Fund the networking of researchers Reinforce the thematic networks by coordinating the activities that they involve Duration: 2-3 years Participants :minimum 3 participants from 3 countries

CA Activities • Performance of studies, analyses, benchmarking exercises • Exchange and dissemination of information • Exchange and dissemination of good practices • Exchange of personnel • Organisation of conferences, seminars, meetings • Setting up of common information systems • Setting up of expert groups • Definition, organisation and management of joint or common initiatives

MARIE CURIE ACTIONS(Mobility of Researchers) Definition: Providing broad support for the mobility of human resources to and from the European Research Area, to promote international dimension of research, networking and scientific collaboration Aims and Objectives: Provide a variety of options for researchers at all levels, as well as host institutions, to ease the way for cooperative research, sharing of knowledge and experience in all scientific areas Number of Participants:one or more

  26. TIPS-1 • It is always very practical and easier to start as a partner in a project (not coordinator) • In practice, the minimum number of partners given in the Call is never enough • Since there is limited experience in FPs, it is much easier for Turkish researchers to write proposal using STREP, SSA as instruments • MC activities are very suitable for mobility purposes, ranging from early researchers to the most experienced and well-known

  27. TIPS-2 • If you get an offer to join a consortium, do so. It is the best way to learn about the process • A very good way of being involved in the process (without even writing a proposal) is to become an evaluator • A project proposal can be 50-160 pages long! • Keep in mind: writing an FP6 project proposal is not easy, however, many people have been successful. YOU CAN DO IT, TOO!
