  1. As technologies are progressing and the world is advancing, electronic components are becoming larger and intricate. And, these large and intricate components require more intricate PCBs. This has brought innovations in the development of high density wiring and advancement in drilling technology. One of the most important processes of this innovative lot is the no-contact laser process that requires no blades for manufacturing high density PCBs. This technology rules out problems of blade blunting and chipping, while also bringing better performance on hole diameter accuracy, quality consistency, and process speed. But, in this laser technology, where multiple laser pulses are required to be shot every minute, the pulses must maintain a consistent waveform so that the laser beam can make neat holes of the same shape and size. To clearly identify any variations in the waveform, IPC controlled devices are paired with a monitored laser pulse waveform measurement system to ensure drilling quality. There are many manufacturers who can offer equipment for such PCB precise drilling and milling. There must be high standards met for the product quality, high precision, high efficiency, high stability, and low operation costs so that the products can be taken to the next level. For this, digitizers must be of 14-bit resolution, and use CO2 laser drill. It must be able to collect pulse signals with high speed, and perform specialized computing like data accumulation and comparison with preset values. Advantech’s laser pulse signal measurement includes PCIE-1840 high-speed digitizer for precise laser pulse signal collection, a customized FPGA for performing specialized computing, and a customized Windows driver for simple development. First, the laser

  2. pulse signal acquisition stop point and standard and error values are set via the customized Windows driver. Then, the PCIE-1840 installed in the IPC automatically captures pulse signals, after which the collected data is accumulated on the FPGA that is embedded in the PCIE-1840. Then, the sum is compared with the preset standard and error values. The results attained are then transmitted to the IPC. The results, if within the preset values, are stored in the IPC hard disk for future tracking and searching. If not, a variation in the laser pulse is implied, based on which the IPC may either send out a warning or perform a shutdown. The 4 channel PCIE-1840 here increases the precision of laser drills by four times, while also enabling high speed continuous data acquisition. Thus, the PCIE-1840 is a quality product with super high performance available at a comparatively reasonable cost. Thus, we can see how this new digitizer is an indispensable pulse signal acquisition tool for laser drill pulse measurement system development. The digitizer’s resolution and sampling rate determine if the high speed and precise data acquisition requirements of the equipment are satisfied. Advantech’s PCIE-1840 is the world’s first 4 channel digitizer that is extremely suitable for applications requiring high speed pulse signal collection.
