WiFi On Trains – How Does It Work? - Alltronix India

Isn’t having a free WiFi connection on the train an excellent offer for passengers? India already has many trains offering the facility, but have you ever thought about how the entire system works on a moving train?

  1. Our world is revolving around the internet all day long. Whether it is to browse some information, get the latest news, buy something online, find out nes about our favourite stars, expand our business, or do anything else, everything is done in almost a jiffy with the internet. While we all are almost on the 4G network now, some of us still rely on WiFi. The major portion of such users are those who want to use the net at a stagnant place for a long time, like maybe the home or office. Or, there could be another reason why we would look for WiFi –when our mobile networks aren’t working the best. One such place is on a train. When we are travelling by train, the worst part is the network. We don’t have a steady network to stay in touch with the others, or to stay on a call, let alone staying online. No mobile network works its best while on a train, which is why passengers are desperately looking for a wireless on board train networking in India, which helps them connect to the WiFi and stay in touch with the online world without any interruptions. Such WiFi makes travelling on the train easy, comfortable, and frustration-free. But, one thing to think about is how WiFi on train works. When we are at home or in the office, we know that we are stagnant, thus establishing a WiFi connection there is very easy. But, how is the same possible on a moving train? Companies like Alltronix partner with leaders in the wireless on board train networking in India to help provide rugged WiFi solutions for train-to-wayside, inter-carriage, and onboard communications to passengers. But how the entire system works, let’s find out. A train is fitted with a number of Wireless Access Points that can help boost coverage across the coaches. These points connect to the satellite and phone networks, which helps the WiFi to function. However, when the train is moving, the signal strength can vary with

  2. distance and speed. This is because along the journey, the train passes through quite some rural areas or tunnels, where network coverage isn't really good. But, one drawback here is the bandwidth. Just like at home or office, the WiFi on trains also has only a certain amount of bandwidth available, which can be quickly used up due to high demand and data-heavy nature of online content. However, efforts are being put in to make an improvement, and improve the connection points along tracks and on the trains. Although it may take some time and engineering, but things are going to be positive in the future for sure. So now, the next time you book a train, check if it is WiFi, because if it is, you can get ready to have a great time accessing the internet on your journey without much interruption, as is with your mobile data! Just to let you know, Howrah -Delhi Rajadhani Express was the first train in India to have WiFi facility; and looking at its success, the central government extended the free WiFi facility to other trains like Shatabdi, Duranto, and Tejas too!
