  1. Racial Prejudice BY: David Williamson and Yianni Tsiamis

  2. History of Racial Prejudice in U.S. • Racism has been a major social issue in the US dating back to the colonial era and slavery • Slavery was formally abolished following the Civil War through the 13th Amendment, but this did not mark the end of racism • Significant strides were made to end racism throughout the 20th century, primarily during the 1960s civil rights movement led by civil rights advocates such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X.

  3. History of Racial Prejudice in U.S(Cont.) • Although all legal racist/discriminatory institutions have been abolished in the US today, racism is still a part of our culture however miniscule. We must strive as a people to get rid of this horrid prejudice.

  4. Causes of Racial Prejudice • Fundamentally, racism is not all that complicated a topic. • It is mainly the result of ignorance and/or bigotry on the part of the oppressor. • Ignorance causes prejudice when someone has not been properly informed about the immorality of racism.

  5. Causes of Racial Prejudice(Cont.) • Bigotry is when the person acting in a racist fashion refuses to accept the equality of another even after being properly informed.

  6. Effects of Racial Prejudice • Racism is an all around negative for just about everyone involved, especially nowadays. • Not only is the person whom the prejudice is directed at psychologically hurt by the discrimination, but they, and the economy as a whole, can take an economical hit from such prejudice...

  7. Effects of Racial Prejudice(Cont.) • … If employers and people in charge of hiring workers have racist ideals factored into their system of hiring, not only will the racially oppressed individual suffer financially, but the nation as a whole will suffer economically as unemployment rises over time. • Here is a brief video, demonstrating how racial oppression can make extraordinary people appear less capable intellectually, phyiscally, etc., than they actually are… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGxlAvPQG18

  8. Racial Prejudice: Solutions • Racism has been a problem around the globe throughout our history as the human race, but we have certainly made strides, particularly in the US, towards various possible solutions. • One very effective means of solving racism has been non-violent, loving protest, primarily advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. • Another approach, advocated by Malcolm X in the 1960s, is resorting to violence and demanding the rights deserved by all people.

  9. The Church’s Standpoint on Racism • In the eyes of the Church, all men and women, have been created in the image and likeness of God, and are deserving of equal treatment by their peers regardless of race, creed, or color. • Therefore… Racism is in fact considered a serious sin by the Church. • Consequently, the Church supports all efforts to refute and eventually halt racism as a practice completely.

  10. Conclusion Although racial prejudice has been an ongoing issue throughout history, we are closer to a solution than ever before. If we continue to make strides toward the end of racism, by the grace of God, we will inevitably overcome this struggle at some point in the not-too-distant future.
