Four-step editing process. The first copy is the worst copy. If you are merely spell checking, you are not editing. Editing is more than checking for grammar. In almost all cases, a writer can add needed content, subtract unnecessary content and improve the flow and structure of sentences.

  2. The first copy is the worst copy. If you are merely spell checking, you are not editing. • Editing is more than checking for grammar. In almost all cases, a writer can add needed content, subtract unnecessary content and improve the flow and structure of sentences. • Looking at a story three or more times will ensure a writer has improved her or his story.

  3. Step I: Edit for informational content • Check the lead. Make sure it is sound, interesting and makes sense. • Read to determine if you have left out important facts, or failed to complete facts. Do not leave the reader wondering what you left out of the story. • Make sure the rest your sentences make sense. • Read to see if the sentences are in the best possible sequence. • If you have information that is more compelling at the bottom of the story, raise it higher. • Check to see if your story matches your lead. Do not lead with one thing and write about something else. • Make sure story is in good taste. Eliminate slang or offensive comments • Eliminate opinion statements. • Make sure you have transitions before quotes.

  4. Step II: Micro-Level Edit for word choices and sentence length • a. Eliminate unneeded or excess words from every sentence • b. Attempt to install active voice verbs in favor of passive voice verbs. • c. Eliminate run-on sentences. • d. Make sure you are not changing tense, and are using the appropriate tense.

  5. Step III: Edit for Grammar • Punctuation. • Comma use. • Semi-colon use. • Quotation marks • Break out AP Style book and check accordingly. • BMakesure you are not ending sentences with prepositions.

  6. IV: Make sure it’s legit • Read through the piece one final time.
