  1. Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, and Radius gauges Exp.3 Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  2. OBJECTIVE • To demonstrate the correct method of measuring using an outside micrometer. • To become familiar with micrometer. • To show the correct choice and use of gauge sets. • To identify the common types, length, diameter, grade, and thread pitch of threaded fasteners. Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  3. Micrometers • A micrometer is a widely used device in mechanical engineering for precisely measuring thickness of blocks, outer and inner diameters of shafts and depths of slots. • Micrometers have several advantages over other types of measuring instruments like the vernier caliper they are easy to use and their readouts are consistent. • A micrometer generally provides greater precision than a caliper, but can measure a smaller range of lengths. Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  4. Micrometers Types • Outside Micrometer • Inside Micrometer • Depth Micrometer Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  5. Micrometers Types(CONT.) • Vernier Micrometer • Digital Micrometer • Dial Micrometer Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  6. Micrometer Parts Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  7. Micrometer Reading • A= 7.38mm • B=7.72mm Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  8. Feeler Gauge • A feeler gauge is a simple tool used to measure thicknesses. It is mostly used in engineering to measuring the clearance between two parts.. • Taper & Parallel feeler gauge is a feeler gauge of tapered, as opposed to parallel, shape. Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  9. Radius Gauge • A radius gauge is a tool used to measure the radius of an object. Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  10. Thread Pitch Gauge • It used to quickly determine the pitch of various threads by matching the teeth on the leaves with teeth on the work. Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges

  11. Describe the procedure of the experiment. Determine class average, standard deviation, the percentage of error and accuracy for the micrometer measurements. What are the sources of error in the measurements with micrometer? List the types of micrometers (with figures and its function) . Mention the function of the micrometer parts (slide 6). Questions Exp.3: Micrometers &Feeler, Pitch, Radius and Dial gauges
