  9. Anatomic Groupings • Spastic Diplegia – Most common • Spastic Quadriplegia or Tetraplegia • Spastic Hemiplegia- one sided

  11. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) • Every 23 seconds a US citizen sustains a TBI • Insult to brain, not congenital • No two brain injuries are alike • Effects are complex and varied • BI can cause changes in internal functions • Changes can be temporary or permanent

  12. 1.4 million have a TBI each year • 50, 000 die • 235, 000 hospitalized • ( CDC, retrieved April,2010)

  13. Etiology • Outside forces • Direct blow to head • Rapid acceleration & deceleration of the head (Shaken baby syndrome) • Airway obstruction

  14. Motor vehicle-traffic crashes (20%); • Struck by/against events (19%); and • Assaults (11%) • Blasts are a leading cause of TBI for active duty military personnel in war zones.
