  3. Transcendentalism • The goal is to aim for perfection • Look to nature not the bible • Imagination • Feeling • Nature • Logic • Best known Transcendentalist is Ralph Waldo Emerson (influential writer)

  4. Romanticism • Thought that values feeling over reason • Reaction against rationalism • Imagination over rational thinking • Used powerful motion • Searched for exotic settings in natural places

  5. Romanticism • Highest form of imagination is poetry • Lowest form of imagination is science • Edger Allan Poe once said that science is a vultures with wings of dull realities preying on hearts of poets

  6. Dark Romanticism • Doesn’t believe in perfection • Emphasized down fall of people and bad qualities • Anthropomorphized evil (character represents evil)
