Stergeos “love, feel affection for...someone, of the love of a wife for her husband” (Arndt & Gingrich, p.766) “It is a love that is ‘a natural movement of the soul,’ ‘something almost like gravitation or some other force of blind nature.’” (Wuest, Word Studies in the Greek New Testament, v. III, second section, p. 110) E.g., Rom. 1:31

It is a love that called out one's heart as a response to the pleasure one takes in a person or object....The words which best express this kind of love are ‘fondness, affection, liking.’” (Wuest, p. 111) E.g., Matt. 10:37

It is passion seek- ing satisfaction....This love is ‘an overmastering passion siezing upon and absorbing into itself the whole mind.’” (Wuest, p. 111) Not found in the Bible

Agapeo (love addressed in this lesson) “love” (A&G, p. 5) “It is a love called out of a person's heart by ‘an awakened sense of value in an object which causes one to prize it.’ It expresses a love of approbation and esteem. Its impulses come from the idea of prizing.” (Wuest, p. 112) E.g., Jn. 3:16; Eph. 5:25; 1 Jn. 2:15

THE MEANING OF LOVE Such love is an act of the will more than an emotional feeling • God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34) • God desires all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4) • God loved man “while we were enemies” (Rom. 5:8,10) • God gave his only begotten Son to save the lost (Jn. 3:16) • God is longsuffering willing that all be saved (2 Pet. 3:9) • God is willing to forgive sins of the lost and his children (Lk. 19:10; 1 Jn. 1:9) • God pursues the lost and erring (Mk. 16:15; Gal. 6:1) • God continues to do good to those who are evil (Mat. 5:45) • Jesus served/serves sinners and erring (Matt. 20:28; Jn. 1:29; Heb. 4:16; 7:25) • God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezek. 33:11)
