  17. How are waves formed? • By the wind blowing across the surface of the water. • The water in a wave never moves left or right, it only moves up and down. • This means, if you follow a wave from offshore to land, you are only watching energy movement. The water in the wave that hits land is not the same water that was in the originating offshore wave. NSF North Mississippi GK-8

  19. Water in a wave moves up and down not left or right. NSF North Mississippi GK-8

  20. Why is the ocean salty? • Rivers and streams flow into the ocean and bring salts with them. • There is very little salt in the rivers. That is why they do not taste salty. • Although each river gives the ocean only a small amount of salt, after ALL the rivers dump their salt into the ocean, the ocean becomes very salty. • Once the salt is in the ocean, water can evaporate but salt cannot. NSF North Mississippi GK-8

  21. RIVER NSF North Mississippi GK-8 OCEAN

  22. Why is the ocean blue? • When sunlight hits the ocean there are lots of water particles that scatter the blue light back to our eyes. NSF North Mississippi GK-8
