  1. 2nd Agricultural Revolution 17th-19thCenturies

  2. Where did it all begin?

  3. Change • There was a dramatic change in life and culture as the 2nd agricultural revolution hit Europe • Began in England with the development of mechanization • Also called the British Agricultural Revolution • This happened at the same time as the Industrial Revolution

  4. Major Events • Enclosures • Mechanization • 3 or 4 field rotation • Selective breeding

  5. Enclosures

  6. Enclosures • Prior to 2nd Ag. Rev. the fields were open, meaning individuals shared large fields and worked smaller plots or strips in the open fields • Enclosures are individually owned fields that break up the bigger fields • This led to farmers losing land and grazing rights leaving many unemployed • Land reform and loss of rights/power of rural populations created the larger land ownership by individual ( essential for mechanization)

  7. Mechanization Inventions in the mechanization process changed the way farming was done. Increased production through inventions ,such as the JethroTull seed drill and the Iron plough, helped reduce number of farmers needed.

  8. Field Rotation • The rotation of crops through 3 or 4 different fields increased the yields • The need for nitrogen was naturally increased with different crops or letting the field remain unplanted • Rotate the deep root and shallow root plants to help with field usage and yields

  9. Selective breeding

  10. Selective Breeding • Picking the most desirable and larger livestock for breeding • Keep the genetics and desired qualities together • End result and larger more profitable livestock • Link to selective breeding techniques • http://www.doobybrain.com/2008/02/15/belgian-blue-meet-the-super-cow/

  11. Results • I want to take some time and make a list of several different things that resulted from the 2nd agricultural revolution. • Make sure you mention what was the cause and what was the result • List both positive and negative results
