  1. Building Our Future Now

  2. Building Health Sight Savers America (SSA) works to identify and secure treatment for unmet vision and health needs that impede a child's ability to reach their full potential in school and in life. Sight Savers works with their extensive volunteer network to arrange comprehensive eye care including scheduling appointments and transportation, making arrangements for eyeglasses, medications, eye surgeries, vision aids, or any other prescribed treatment. Through its KidCheck Plus Program, SSA provides comprehensive, school-based, head to toe health screenings for children. In 2013, over 25,000 children in Alabama were served through SSA and partnerships including numerous ones at UAB and Callahan Eye Hospital.

  3. Building Community In 2013, the Employee Emergency Assistance Program (EEAP) awarded $192,241 to 174 employees facing a financial crisis through no fault of their own. Having exhausted leave time while receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, the realization of facing a bone marrow transplant and months off work with a reduction in pay was daunting for Lori Miles an employee in the Office of the Vice Provost Student and Faculty Success. Miles says, “The EEAP program was instrumental in helping me maintain health insurance during the critical time before and during my transplant. It gave me a peace of mind. It was a true blessing from God and my co-workers. Thank you!”

  4. Building Affordable Housing In the fall of 2014, UAB employees will build affordable housing for someone in our community. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat. UAB will have numerous opportunities for volunteering as individuals and in groups. In the past 5 years, Habitat has built 34 houses for our UAB family including 30 employees and 9 students. If every employee donates an additional one time gift of $2.50 to the Benevolent Fund, we can build a new house. Help us sponsor our first Habitat House by making your additional pledge to UAB’s Habitat House.

  5. Building Our Future Now 2013 Results - $1,821,336 Pledged $1,313,254 - Local Nonprofit Agencies $192,241 - EEAP (174 employees) 2014 Goal - $1,850,000* *This represents less than 0.1% of our payroll.

  6. Building Partnerships “Every year, the agencies we support provide UAB $20-25M in research grants. Additionally, our students reap immeasurable opportunities to grow through service learning with these community partners. It is essential that we donate generously to those who play such a pivotal role in UAB’s continued success as well as the progress and well-being of our overall community.” Dr. Linda Lucas Provost, UAB
