  2. Description • Downhill Skiing includes: • Alpine Skiing (downhill, slalom, giant slalom, and combined) • Freestyle • Cross Country • Nordic Combined (involves ski jumping and cross country skiing)

  3. History • The 1936 Winter Olympic Games in Austria was the first time that Alpine Skiing was introduced • It was called the “Combine” • Was an event for both men and women

  4. Because of WWII, the Winter Olympics were not held again until 1948 in St. Moritz • Since it had been 12 years from the event, Alpine Skiing was a major event, and excited millions of people • Since 1936, Alpine Skiing has been in every Winter Olympics

  5. Records • Only two people in the history of Alpine Skiing have won all of the events (downhill, slalom, and giant slalom) • Toni Sailer was from Austria • Jean-Claude Killy was from France
