  2. What is Skiing? • Skiing is a popular sport that is enjoyed world wide by groups ranging from young children to actual olympic skiers. Participants strap skis, or long boards with curved tips, to each booted foot and use them, along with ski poles, to glide down snow-covered mountains.

  3. Why Skiing is Great! There are lots of things about skiing I really like • The feeling of going as fast or slow as you want. • Seeing the mountains as you drift down. • Being around people who also enjoy the activity.

  4. Equipment List!! • You need all of the following in order to go!!- Skis!!! - Ski Pants!- Ski boots - Wind block!- Goggles!!- Ski poles-Gloves!- Really warm Clothing- Neck warmer!

  5. Skiing and the Environment! • Wildlife is disturbed by the initial construction and nightly maintenance of ski trails. • Due to global warming, snow has become less reliable at lower altitudes and the use of artificial snowmaking has increased.

  6. Why Skiing lessons are important. • Everyone should take skiing lessons. Beginner ski instruction has little to do with one’s physical shape, athleticism, or weight. • The first day you’ll focus on stopping and turning. A good instructor can show you fundamental ski techniques quickly and easily that will get you off to a great start

  7. Risks of injury • In alpine skiing, there are around three injuries per thousand skiing days. Knee injuries are most common, but broken bones and death are possible. • Wear a Ski helmet to reduce the risk of any injury, They are now in common use amongst all classes and ages.

  8. History of Skiing. • Pre-historic Nordic people used skis to assist in hunting and transportation. • A carving from 5000 B.C shows a skier with one pole. • The first ski was found in Sweden in a bog which dates back to 2500 or 4500 B.C

  9. Skiing for people with disabilities • Skiing for people with disabilities came popular after world war II with the return of injured veterans. Today it is a competitive sport and a great way to pass time.

  10. Benefits of Skiing • It’s a great way to stay fit and maintain a good health • Skiing is highly accessible, even to disabled students • personal and social development • the opportunity to set and achieve personal goals

Skiing Destinations! • Millions of people each year come to ski in Canada, they are well maintained and easy to get to • British Columbia has the most ski resorts of any province in Canada. • Alberta is blessed with the Rocky Mountains and boasts the three biggest ski draws in the province: Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Sunshine Village and Mt. Norquay • Quebec's main ski regions are the Laurentians, Quebec City and its region, Eastern Townships and Charlevoix
