  1. Aim: How did the Neolithic Age change history? I. Paleolithic Age ends about 10,000 years ago, and the Neolithic Age (“New Stone Age”) begins. DON’T COPY: Humans have two choices: • Continue being nomads and using hunting and gathering to survive. • Start to create permanent settlements and try farming Which would you choose and why?

  2. II. Characteristics of the Neolithic Age • Humans give up being nomads and form permanent settlements. • Instead of being hunters and gatherers, humans become farmers and start planting wheat, barley and rice. • Humans start domesticating animals: Taming animals like horses, pigs, sheep and cows to use on the farm.

  3. III. Results of the Neolithic Age • Humans now have a surplus of food  more food than they need for their basic survival. This means not everyone has to be a farmer anymore. What effect will this have on the population? What are some new things that people can start to focus on if they don’t have to spend all of their time growing food?

  4. B. Specialization of jobs: Since not everyone has to be a farmer, people can take on a variety of jobs (potters, weavers, metal workers, etc.)

  5. C. Rise of Villages: Once people began to produce food, they formed villages of 150-200 people. An early example was Catal Hϋyϋkin Turkey:

  6. D. Rise of Government: Villages would select chiefs to settle disputes and direct village activities. E. Rise of Religion: Chiefs would also be priests who would pray for rich soil, healthy animals and water for crops.
