  1. ELECTRIC FIELD & CHARGE FLOW PHYSICS FORM 5

  2. OBJECTIVE: • At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: • Identify the electric field and charge • flow. • Identify the electric current. • Identify the type of ammeters. • Know how to sketch the electric field • lines. • Identity the effect of electric field • acting on a charged body.

  6. ELECTRIC FIELD Q1: What causes like charges to repel and unlike charges to attract? Answer: This is because a charged object exerts an electrostatic force (that is attractive force or repulsive force) on nearby objects.

  7. ELECTRIC FIELD • The charge object sets up an electric field in the space around it. • When a charge is moving in an electric field, an electric current is said to flow.

  8. ELECTRIC FIELD LINES The direction of electrostatic forces experienced by two opposite charges (electrodes) in electric field. Electric field lines are directed from positive charge(electrode) to negative charge(electrode).

  9. This figures show the direction of the electrostatic forces…..

  10. The closer the electric fields lines, the stronger electrostatic forces. • The electric field lines neither branch off nor intersect one another.

  11. Effect of Electric Field Acting On A Charged Body

  12. Van de Graaff • Electric field is formed by using a Van de Graaff generator. • Charges are transmitted to body when person touch the generator.

  13. Human body forms an electric field around it. • The hairs stand on the ends because they carry like charges and repel each other.

  14. CHARGE FLOW • Negative electric charges which are carried by electrons are “pushed” from the negative terminal (-) of the cell. • These electrons go through the circuit and back to the positive terminal (+) of the cell. • This flow of electric charges forms an electric current.

  15. ELECTRIC CURRENT • Is defined as the rate of charge flow, that is

  16. Where Q is the quantity of charge flow and t is the time taken • The unit of electric current is ampere (A) • The unit of the quantity of charge flow is coulomb (C). • Hence, 1A = 1Cs¯¹

  17. TYPE OF AMMETERS • Electric current is measured by using an ammeter, a milliammeter or a microammeter. 1. Ammeter

  18. 2. Miliammeter 3. Microammeter
