  6. What is a chemical reaction? • Chemical reactions change substances into different substances by breaking and forming chemical bonds.

  8. Bond Energy • In order for reactants to change into products, bonds must break and new bonds must form. • The energy required to break a bond between 2 atoms is called bond energy.

Chemical Equilibrium • Some reactions only go in one direction, from reactants products. • But, many reactions in organisms are reversible and can move in both directions at the same time: reactants products. • When a reaction takes place at an equal rate in both directions, the reaction is in equilibrium.

  10. Chemical reactions can release or absorb energy • Whether a chemical reaction releases or absorbs energy, a certain amount of energy is required to start the reaction. • The amount of energy that must be absorbed for a chemical reaction to start is the: activation energy
