  2. Today’s Workshop • Will provide an opportunity for you to work with your children in collaboration to improve your understanding of the PYP Exhibition

  3. Today’s Workshop • What is the PYP Exhibition? • The roles and responsibilities of students and parents. • The Exhibition at Glenealy

  4. What is the PYP Exhibition? An Inquiry that requires students to apply their learning from previous years and take action Refer to examples from the peak Children reflect on the Units of Inquiry they have been involved in over the years. This leads to an in-depth group inquiry into issues directly connected to their school or local area. These may also be relevant to children in other parts of the world

Some of the key purposes of the PYP Exhibition: • for students to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry • to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning • to provide students with an opportunity to explore multiple perspectives • for students to synthesize and apply their learning of previous years and to reflect upon their journey through the PYP • to demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning

  7. Glenealy Exhibition 2012 Types of action • Research - finding out more about an issue. • Direct - requires personal contact. • Indirect - channels resources to the problem rather than direct contact. • Advocacy - when people raise awareness to eliminate the causes of a specific problem.

  9. Concept Questions Form - What is it like? Function - How does it work? Causation - why is it like this? Connection - how is it connected to other things? Change - how is it changing? Perspective - what are the different points of view? Responsibility - What is our responsibility?

The role of the Student • With teacher support, carry out an open-ended or guided inquiry into a real-life issue or problem. • To demonstrate their learning and the development of the attributes of the IBO learner profile • Be academically honest when referring to their sources of information • Reflect on the components of and processes involved in the Exhibition. • Carry out self and peer assessment.

The role of the Student Within each group, the following aspects need to be included: • Examples of written work (Exhibition Journal & Exhibition display board) • Oral presentations • Examples of the use of technology (where appropriate) • Performances in any medium - dance, drama, film, video, mixed media

The role of the Parent To have an understanding of the purpose and requirements of the PYP Exhibition To support and encourage students and teachers through the process of inquiry so that they may take real and authentic action. To keep informed about the Exhibition by talking with your son/daughter and other Y6 students and checking any communication sent from school.

  13. The role of the Parent continued... To help your child to access resources - people, places, media and information To provide expert subject knowledge where applicable To encourage independent inquiry and respect student ownership of the process Ensure that your child writes notes from written material and does not just copy out the work. To celebrate with your son/daughter by attending the exhibition on the evening

  14. The role of the Mentor Mentor – ˈmenˌtôr; (noun) an experienced and trusted advisor

The role of the Mentor • Each action group will be assigned a mentor • Hold meetings with their ‘group’ (it is the students responsibility to liaise with mentors to organise these meetings.) • Be supportive and encouraging. • Offer advice on locating and using resources. • Pose questions and help interpret sophisticated/difficult information. • Give time management advice • Celebrate achievements and successes with the Group • Currently there are a number of teachers and Educational Assistants who have volunteered to mentor a group.

  24. We share the Planet with7 Billion People Something for us all to remember… • This is the 1st exhibition carried out by Glenealy School.
