  2. Essential Question • How can I create clear and coherent writing while quoting accurately from a text?

  3. Syllabication RF.5.3 • Let’s watch the today’s video. • Complete the activities on Day 2 as we watch the video.

  4. Idioms, Proverbs, and Adages Oh, so that is what it is… L5.5b

  5. Adages • Widely known, short sayings that give very basic advice on how to live. • They are simpler and shorter than proverbs. Examples • The show must go on… • You get what you pay for…

  6. Proverbs • A proverb is usually longer than an adage • It states the collected wisdom and superstitions of humans and has a deeper meaning. Examples • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket • One man’s trash is another man’s treasure • People who live in glass houses should not throw stones

  7. Idioms • An idiom is a group of words that have completely different meaning than what the individual words mean. • We use idioms to express things in a creative way and not to give advice or wisdom. Examples • She is full of beans – means that she has lots of energy. • Hold your horses – means to slow down.

  8. Now it’s your turn You will need • a pencil • a half-sheet ( in the basket)

  9. Is it an adage, a proverb, or an idiom? • Better safe than sorry • Couch potato • It’s no use crying over spilled milk • Down the drain • No pain, no gain

  10. Now the eggs are in your basket… • Complete the worksheet for homework. • Begin looking and listening for proverbs, adages, and idioms in your reading, in your home, in your school. They are everywhere.

  11. Thinking about… Did Charlotte choose a wise course of action at the end of chapter 9? Why or Why not? Take a minute to think about your answer to this question and to jot some evidence that supports your opinion.

  13. Think about on page 83 • Why did the Avi, the author, include the fact that Mr. Zachariah was the only man not armed? Knowing what you know about Mr. Zachariah, why would he not be armed?

  14. Think about on page 86 and 87 • There were nine men left. Who was the only one that was brave enough to step forward? Knowing what you know, did you expect this of him? Why or why not?

  15. Summing it up… • The last sentence in the book is “Mr. Zachariah, step forward.” Why is Captain Jaggery asking Zachariah to do this? What evidence supports your prediction?
