Career and college readiness specialist • Support students with future endeavors, one-on-one transition planning* • Involved in HOSA and SkillsUSA student organizations • Visit member high schools for recruitment purposes • “Transition to College” Speaker Series * • Articulation meetings between Century College and High Schools or Career and Technical Center • Involved with collection and entering the programs of study onto www.mnpos.com website • Lead Student Ambassador program with focus on leadership, retention and recruitment

Transition Planning • One-on-one meeting with each senior twice a year • Meet with juniors in a small group once a year • Talk about a student’s future plans & help assist in fulfillment of plan • Offer services and support • Remind students of deadlines & having a “plan B” • Promote different activities to get involved in at CTC • Mock interviews and resume writing assistance • Financial Aid application and scholarship writing assistance

Transition to college series • Seven presentations throughout the year on subjects pertaining to college • Presenters are from Century College • Presentations last about 30 minutes each and are held on Fridays once a month during class • Students can choose which presentations to attend based on their level of interest or need • Attending five of the seven presentations will earn a student $20 (application fee refund from Century College) • Opportunity to take college placement test

College Presentation 2 • 916 College Readiness Specialist • Explain Accuplacer test • Hand out study guides specific to Accuplacer • Give test dates • Describe importance of test • Answer questions • Century Support Services • Study skill strategies • General studying guidelines • Answer questions

College presentation 3 • Century Counselor • What a college counselor is, and why would students need to access them • Differences between an advisor and a college counselor • Registering for classes • Answer questions • Student Life Representative • Talks about the “fun” side of college • Intramural sports, fitness room, extracurricular activities, student senate, clubs, etc… • Student housing, parking and other “need to know” • Answer questions

College Presentation 4 • Century Support Services • Overview of Century College resources • Lists of contacts for academic support • How to transfer an IEP to college • Answer questions • Century Student Experience Director • Introduce the GPS Life Plan website • Goals + Planning = Success • Students can begin using this tool now • Answer questions

College Presentation 5 • 916 College Readiness Specialist • Introduce FAFSA • Hand out FAFSA application • Myths about financial Aid • Support student in application for FAFSA as well as scholarships • Century Financial Aid Representative • Explains details and importance of filling out FAFSA • Encourages all students to apply for student aid • 916 Foundation Representative • Information on the 916 student scholarships • Century Foundation Representative • Information on Century college scholarships • Hand out Century scholarship booklets • Century Support Services • Writing scholarship essays

  12. College Presentation 7 • Century College Student Panel • Group of 5-6 college students answer questions and talk about their college experience • “I wish I would have…” • Share expertise about college life • Tell stories about the first week of classes • Answer questions

  14. College admissions • Apply for admission to college by filling out application online or paper version • Take the assessment test: Accuplacer • Attend student orientation and register for classes • Pay for tuition and books

  15. Things to Think About When choosing a College • Decide on a goal for the first semester. • Look at your assessment scores. • Consider what hours you can attend and how many credits you can take. • Make a “time” plan. How will you balance work, school and a social life.

This program has the flexibility to be used by students of all ages and at all stages

  17. Managing Your Time • Recommended amount of study time: • 2 to 3 hours of study time per credit. • 12 credit load means you should study a minimum of 24 hours a week. • Consider all of your life obligations when you determine your credit load.

  18. ACCUPLACER TEST • Everyone is accepted to Century College but the score you get on the assessment test helps the school place you in the correct classes • Certain majors require higher test scores • You can take the test twice in a 12 month period • The test is done on a computer, and is not timed • Areas tested; Reading, Sentence Skills and Math • Scores print out immediately after testing and each student is counseled about their score • Students can take test at college of choice or at the 916 CTC on specified dates

  19. Study Strategies • Give yourself enough rest and energy (from food) • Use a calendar to help set aside time for studying and know when assignments are due • Know your learning style; visual, auditory, etc… • Study in an environment similar to the one you will be testing in • Get help from tutors or support staff • Plan to use 2-3 hours outside of class for each hour in class
