Who Is Qualified For Membership? • Mission and Purpose • To encourage and recognize excellence in the electrical and computer engineering fields • Enable student members to develop lifelong skills that prepare them for prominent positions in industry and academia • Recognize professional leaders, exceptional educators, outstanding students, young ECE professionals, outstanding chapters, and effective advisors

  4. What is HKN? Who Is Qualified For Membership? • History • Founded on Oct. 8, 1904 by Maurice L. Carr, an EE student at the University of Illinois, and nine other students • Most important qualification originally was the character and attitude of student candidates • Scholarship soon became the primary requirement, with character and other personal attributes secondary

Who Is Qualified For Membership? • History (continued) • 1906: HKN’s first publication, “The Electrical Field” devoted almost entirely to the subject of employment • 1947: Mandatory qualifications set to top 25% of Junior class and top 33% of Senior class • Wheatstone Bridge symbol was selected as the emblem of HKN • 1959: Induction ceremonies become open to friends and family

Who Is Qualified For Membership? • History (continued) • “The Electrical Field” is still published twice a year, now known as “The Bridge” • In the last decade, HKN included has focused not only on EE but also on CE • HKN now has 200 university chapters and over 200,000 members • UTA Epsilon Mu Chapter founded April 30, 1966

Henry Samueli: Founder of Broadcom Paul and Irwin Jacobs: Founder of Qualcomm

Qualifications for Membership Who Is Qualified For Membership? • Members of HKN • Possess an unimpeachable character • Are able to make use of the knowledge and information acquired • Have the capacity and willingness for hard work • Work in harmony with all types of people • Have a genial nature

  9. Qualifications for Membership Who Is Qualified For Membership? • Junior Undergraduate Students • Top 25% of the Junior class • Senior Undergraduate StudentsTop 33% of Senior class • Graduate Students • All are encouraged to become members

Action Items Who Is Qualified For Membership? • To join, eligible candidates must (continued) • Submit application fee of $80, which covers lifetime membership fee and cost of initiation dinner • Submit all of above by Nov 17 • Attend initiation ceremony on Dec 3 celebrate your accomplishments
