  3. World Anti-Doping Agency • Founded on Nov. 10, 1999 • Funded by IOC • Monitors the fight against drugs in sports • 600 Sports Organizations follow the World Anti-Doping Code

  4. World Anti-Doping Code • The code contains a list of banned substances • Encourages ethics, fair play, and health • Contains Sanctions, as well as Appeal processes

  6. Major League Baseball • Congress threatened the MLB with legislation • Commissioner Bud Selig asked Senator George J. Mitchell to head an investigation • Senator Mitchell went before Congress with his findings in “The Mitchell Report”

  7. MLB’s Old Policy • 1st Offense: 10 day suspension • 2nd Offense: 30 day suspension • 3rd Offense: 60 day suspension

  8. The New Policy • 1st Offense: 50(60-80) Game Suspension • 2nd Offense: 100(120-1yr) Game Suspension • 3rd Offense: Permanent Suspension from MLB and the Minor League • Possession is much worse

  9. NFL Steroid Policy • Longest Running Policy- June 1987 • Random, Year-Round Tests • Up to 12,000 tests each season • Players forfeit a portion of their signing bonus and salary • Only North American sports league to test for EPO (Erythropoietin )

  10. NFL sanctions • 10 Players from each team randomly tested each week during the season • 1st Offense: 4 Game Suspension • 2nd Offense: 1 Year • 3rd Offense: Up to the Commissioner

  11. The USOC • The USOC has a more strict version of the WADA Code • Random Testing Year Round, and at least 4 Tests per year • Includes Separate Violations for Trafficking and Administration to Minors • 1st Offense: 2 Years • 2nd Offense: Lifetime Ban

  12. Conclusion • Both the Government and Individual Leagues are cracking down on Steroids • The Leagues have created stricter policies • The Government fines leagues that don’t perform well • The Government may soon mandate drug testing in high schools
