  2. Steroids Steroids are substances that are characterized by a chemical structure consisting of multiple chemical rings of connected atoms. e.g. Vitamin D, cholesterol, estrogen, cortisone

  3. Anabolic Steroids Anabolic Steroids are synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones. Also called androgenic steroids. “Anabolic” – muscle building. “Androgenic” – increased masculinity. “Steroids” – a class of drugs.

  4. Corticosteroids • Corticosteroids is a class of drugs used to treat arthritis and many other conditions. • These drugs act on the immune system by blocking the production of substances that trigger allergic and inflammatory actions, such as prostaglandins. e.g. Betamethasone, Budesonide, Cortisone, Dexamethasone, Hydrocortisone, Methylprednisolone, prednisolone, and triamcinolone.

  5. Side effects ofCorticosteroids Increased appetite and weight gain Deposits of fat in chest, face, upper back and stomach. Water and salt retention leading to swelling and edema. High blood pressure. Diabetes Osteoporosis Cataracts

  6. Acne Muscle Weakness Thinning of the skin Stomach ulcer Increased susceptibility to infection
