  2. Charlotte AHEC Area Health Education Center • Founded in 1911 by a group of doctors • Funded until 1976 by the Mecklenburg County Medical Society • Merged with the Charlotte AHEC and partnered with the Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1976

  3. The AHEC Library is located on the campus of Carolinas Medical Center

  4. Who do they serve? • The AHEC serves the 25,300 employees of the HealthCare System of CMC . • They also serve 22 residency programs. • Patients and general population also use the library, but may not check materials out.

  5. AHEC ORGANIZATION • The Charlotte AHEC Library is 1 of 9 in the state of North Carolina. • These are part of the National AHEC Organization. • Funding comes mainly from the Hospitals

  6. STAFF • 6 professional librarians • 2 paraprofessional staff

  7. DUTIES • Educational programs: Teaching • Acquisitions • Project Coordinator • Cataloging • Reports • Maintenance • Assistance

  8. ORGANIZATION Since the AHEC is a medical library, it uses the National Library of Medicine call number system which is a division of the Library of Congress. • EXAMPLE: WB 39

  12. INTERVIEW • Why did you select to work at the AHEC Library? Laura was not planning on working in a medical library or any special library. The whole time she was working on her masters she thought she would be working in a public library. Her carpool partner worked with Premier HealthCare and was friends with Lee Kaufmann, the AHEC Director. When a position became available, her friend told her about it, and she decided to apply. She received the job and later became one of the librarians.

  13. What is your main job at the AHEC Library? Laura’s main job is to finalize each book that is in the library. She checks MARC records and assigns barcodes. Laura does a little of all the jobs from acquisions to re-shelving.

  14. Do you deal with Vendors? How? Laura said that the only vendors that actually come to the library are the software vendors. They demonstrate their software and if it is purchased, they come back to train and troubleshoot. Other than that, they only use online catalogues, mailings and email lists.

  15. What do you like and not like about your job? Laura loves her job and the people she works with. She is so happy that she went into the special library field instead of the public library. She loves the patrons. She feels they are more appreciative than the general public. The only thing she does not like about the job is the funding cuts. She knows this will eventually effect the patrons and she is worried about that.

  16. Future of the AHEC Library • The library seems to be heading toward more and more electronic databases. Funding for books was cut from $100,000.00 in 2006 to $0.00 in 2007. This is a concern for the staff and patrons. • OVID and CINAHL databases give numerous full text medical journals. They also have the AHEC Digital Library.
