Great Awakening • Renewal of religious feelings in American colonies (1730s – 1740s) • Preachers become more dramatic; traveling preachers convert thousands. • People question traditional religious authority; individuals switched churches. • New Universities founded to train ministers (Princeton, Brown, Columbia).

  3. Enlightenment • Intellectual movement that emphasized reason and the scientific method as a way of obtaining knowledge. • Men like Thomas Jefferson used reason to argue that men had natural rights that governments had to respect.
