  2. Golden History The Golden Gate bridge started construction on January 5, 1933. It opened May 28, 1937 it took over four years to open.

  3. Golden Characteristics Originally the bridge was constructed to be a symmetrical cantilever – suspension hybrid bridge but turned out to be a suspension cable stayed design.

  4. The Strauss Team The Bridge was built by ten different contractors and their employees but Joseph B. Strauss was the master mind of the whole design.

  5. The Golden Challenge The Golden Solution Strauss was approved $35 million in bonds by the San Francisco voters to construct the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate bridge often has winds up to 60 miles an hour and strong ocean current, plus it was built during a year when funds were low. (The Great Depression)

  6. Impact Before the Golden Gate Bridge the only way across the San Francisco Bay was by boat. The bridge made it easier for people to get across the San Francisco Bay.

  7. Traffic • About 100,000 cars a week, 43 million cars annually .

  8. Golden Interest • The Golden Gate Bridge consists of six main structures. • There's a cofferdam under water big enough to hold a football field ( approx. 360 ft. long by 160 ft wide ) filled with concrete to support the bridge. • One of the seven wonders of the world

  9. The Golden Poem • The Strauss Poem is “The mighty task is done”, Written by Strauss himself. • At last the mighty task is done;Resplendent in the western sunThe Bridge looms mountain high;Its titan piers grip ocean floor,Its great steel arms link shore with shore,Its towers pierce the sky.
