  1. Label Switched Path (LSP) Dynamical Provisioning Performance Metrics in Generalized MPLS Networksdraft-ietf-ccamp-lsp-dppm-02.txt Weiqiang Sun, SJTU Guoying Zhang, CATR, MII Jianhua Gao, Huawei Guowu Xie,SJTU 2008.7

  2. Backgrounds • The successful implementation and operation of GMPLS applications should depend on some performance measurement mechanism that helps service operators or network managers to recognize when performance is unsatisfactory and identify problems. • Standardized performance metrics help to consistent measurement and comparison of GMPLS implementations.

  3. Existing standard Referred • IPPM(IP Performance Metrics) WG • Develop metrics applicable to live IP networks • GMPLS control plane is a packet switched network. GMPLS control plane testing is similar to IP network testing, refer to IPPM Framework and metrics definition • BM (Benchmarking Methodology) WG • Networking technologies and protocols measurement (IEEE 802.3, ATM, FR,Routing Protocols), charter strictly limits to laboratory. • MPLS protocol measurement (draft-vapiwala-bmwg-rsvpte-convergence-motivation-00.txt ) • PMOL(Performance Metrics for Other Layers) WG • New WG from IETF-69 • Common performance metrics developing framework and guidelines • Other standard bodies (ITU-T) :no relative standards

  4. Summary of this draft • Mainly focus on the performance of the signaling protocol • The LSP provisioning performance is similar to the packet delay in the IP networks. Referred to IP round-trip delay to define LSP setup/release delay • metric definition adopt the IPPM framework: Motivation, Metric name, Parameters, Units, Definition, Discussion, Measurement methodologies • Singleton Definition of metrics • Single/multiple unidirectional LSP Setup Delay • Single/multiple bidirectional LSP Setup Delay • LSP Graceful Release Delay • Samples of metrics • Samples of Single/multiple unidirectional LSP Setup Delay • Samples of Single/multiple bidirectional LSP Setup Delay • Samples of LSP Graceful Release Delay

  5. Summary of this draft (Cont.) • Typical testing cases for samples of metrics • Arrival model: pseudo-random Poisson process • “clean“ network state: • Reflects the inherent performance of a GMPLS control plane • “loaded” network state: • Reflects medium or highly loaded GMPLS control plane performance. • Statistical Definition for metrics • Minimum/Median/Percentile • Discussion • Metrics are defined from the control plane‘s point of view, data plane and control plane inconsistency • Unsuccessful setup/release cases

  6. Recent progress • 2008.03, adopted by CCAMP as a working item • More carriers (KDDI, CT) join as co-authors. • Reviewed by experts from CCAMP/ BMWG/ PMOL/ IPPM WG • Adrian Ferral, WG co-chair of CCAMP • Al Morton, WG co-chair of BMWG and PMOL • Henk Uijterwaal, WG co-chair of IPPM • 2008.06 updated to 02 (WG)

  7. Updates since Last Meeting • Fixed some editorial problems • reduce the list of authors • Change “an new object can be added to the GMPLS TE STD MIB”to ” extensions can be made to GMPLS TE STD MIB ” • Delete section 2. “Conventions Used in This Document” • Add more information to Security Considerations • Recovered the *sample definition* part which was removed from older versions. • To cover the failure cases • add a parameter :Td, the maximum waiting time for successful setup • Add section 13 ” Discussion for unsuccessful setup/release cases” • The control-plane-only nature of these metrics are identified in the Introduction/Scope

  8. Open Issues • Arrival model • Despite the poisson process, periodic process may also be used in the sampling process. • do we need a new parameter for the choice of different arrival model? • Two way signaling or three way signaling? • measurement complexity • Two way : easier measurement • Three way: synchronization needed • implementation: seems more three way implementation • We hope to receive more comments from the WG!

  9. LambdaUnite INNI OUNI UNI-C User Interface UNI-N UNI-C Tester OUNI UNI-C Tester ONNS Ethernet Next steps • Implement the draft in a non commercial testing platform • Solve the open issues, request for WGLC within the next few months
