  1. Fact Families Fun Math Activities for 1st graders. Christy McKinney

  2. Fact Family Facts Fact Families are relatable facts. They show the correlation between addition and subtraction facts. It also shows how important each fact or member of the family is to the whole. When teaching basic addition and subtraction facts to first graders I have used this project as it is fun, relatable. It is great for visual and tactile learners as well as auditory learners. One of the great ways to begin teaching this lesson is to draw a correlation between their own families; such as mom + daughter=family and so on. Then pick 3 students and give them each a number and have the class help them organize depending on if it is an addition or subtraction sentence. This is a great prelude to the fact family houses. After the houses it is fun to have the class scramble by giving each student a different number or sign and have them break into different fact families in a set time.

  3. All in the family 3,7,10 a,b,c

  4. This is a Fact Family activity that helps student define and organize fact families. Give each student a copy of the fact family house with varying fact family numbers. Have students place in order the fact family addition and subtraction fact in each window of the house. In the door of the home have the students draw a picture of themselves. Then taking 4 small colored squares and 1 rectangle have students glue the left edge of it over each window and the doorway. Finish activity by having students color house and remaining surroundings. Allow students to share their families with the class.

  5. Additional Activities Place 4 fact family houses on one piece of paper each with their own set of fact family numbers in the top of the house. Have students complete worksheet. For additional challenge write numbers in random order down the side of the sheet and have students locate and write in the numbers that belong in each fact family home. Use as a homework or parent activity with students in conjunction with social study topics such as family and community structure.
