Understanding Fact Families: Relationships Among Numbers Explained

A Fact Family consists of three related numbers that create a set of four mathematical sentences. In this analogy, consider the largest number as the 'Daddy,' the middle number as the 'Mommy,' and the smallest number as the 'Baby.' For example, in the Fact Family of 5, 3, and 8, the addition sentences are 3 + 5 = 8 and 5 + 3 = 8, while the subtraction sentences are 8 - 5 = 3 and 8 - 3 = 5. This concept aids in understanding how numbers are interrelated in mathematics.

  1. 8 - 3 = 5 3 + 5 = 8 5 + 3 = 8 Fact Families 5 + 3 = 8 8 - 5 = 3 3 + 5 = 8 5 + 3 = 8 8 - 5 = 3 8 - 3 = 5 8 - 3 = 5 8 - 5 = 3 3 + 5 = 8

  2. What is a Fact Family? • A Fact Family is a set of related facts. • In math this means 3 numbers that are related in some way. • No other numbers can be included in the family.

  3. Think About Fact Families as a real family • Daddy – Biggest Number • Mommy – Middle Number • Baby – Smallest Number

  4. Lets look at some examples! • 2, 9, 11 • 6, 2, 8 • 5, 7, 2

  5. How do you relate the numbers? • With each family you can produce 4 math sentences. • 2 addition • ____ + ____ = ____ • ____ + ____ = ____ • 2 subtraction • ____ - ____ = ____ • ____ - ____ = ____

  6. Example : 5, 3, 8 • Can anyone make me 2 addition sentences with these numbers? • 3 + 5 = 8 • 5 + 3 = 8 • We used the same two numbers as the addends, we just used what is called turning around the facts.

  7. Example : 5, 3, 8 • Can anyone make me 2 subtraction sentences with these numbers? • 8- 5 = 3 • 8 - 3 = 5

  8. Now put it all together and you have your fact family. 5, 3, 8 3 + 5 = 8 5 + 3 = 8 8 – 5 = 3 8 – 3 = 5
