  2. TEAMWORK • What teams have you been in? • Were they a good team? Why? • What did it feel like to be in that team? • What did it look like? • What did it sounds like? • Describe the characteristics of a good team

  3. Learning from Geese Lessons from Geese provides a perfect example of the importance of team work and how it can have a profound and powerful effect on any form of personal or business endeavour.

  4. The Importance of Achieving Goals Lesson 1: As each goose flaps its wings creates an uplift for the birds that follow. Outcome: When we have a sense of community and focus, we create trust and can help each other to achieve goals.

  5. The Importance of Teamwork Lesson 2: When a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back to take advantage of the lifting power of the other birds. Outcome: If we had as much sense as geese we would stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

  6. The Importance of Sharing Lesson 3: When a goose tires of flying up front it drops back into formation and another goose flies to the point position. Outcome: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks. We should respect and protect each other’s unique arrangement of skills, capabilities, talents and resources.

  7. The importance of empathy and understanding Lesson 4: When a goose gets sick, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to the ground to help and protect it. Outcome: If we have as much sense as geese we will stand by each other in difficult times, as well as when we are strong.

  8. The importance of encouragement Lesson 5: Geese flying in formation ‘Honk’ to encourage those up front to keep up with their speed. Outcome: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups and teams where there is encouragement, production is much greater. ‘Individual empowerment results from quality honking’

  9. Another story about Geese • A flock of wild geese had settled to rest on a pond. One of the flock had been captured by a gardener, who had clipped its wings before releasing it. When the geese started to resume their flight, this one tried frantically, but vainly, to lift itself into the air. The others, observing his struggles, flew about in obvious efforts to encourage him; but it was no use. • Thereupon, the entire flock settled back on the pond and waited, even though the urge to go on was strong within them. For several days they waited until the damaged feathers had grown sufficiently to permit the goose to fly. • Meanwhile, the unethical gardener, having been converted by the ethical geese, gladly watched them as they finally rose together and all resumed their long flight.

  12. Leadership What is it? What does it look like? Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. Someone who….. Remains focused and clear-thinking under pressure. Trust and respect of players and management A person to who you can turn to for help and advice. Has ability to get ideas and concepts over clearly and successfully Inspire others through actions and/or words Experience and respect Good organizational skills Not afraid to make a hard or unpopular decisions for the best of the team

  13. Leadership What does a team look like without it? Why is it essential? • Teams will be disorganized, lack drive or structure. They will normally • argue and fight over important decisions. • Team need to have someone driving the ship, steering them in the right • direction and making the decisions for the team. They need to organize • and motivate the others and use their experience to enhance the teams • performance

  14. Leadership How would you use it? Making decisions in games Mediating disputes Talking and liaising with refs and coach’s Delivering pep talks Picking game plans Encouraging other players Advising and coaching players on the field

  15. Communication What is it? What does it look like? Is something shared between living organisms. Communication requires a sender, a message, and an intended recipient Ability to get ideas over effectively and clearly using a range of verbal and non-verbal means Coach/captain talking to a team or players Organising a session and running it Two way process that requires active listening and cooperation from both parties

  16. Communication What does a team look like without it? Why is it essential? • No talking occurring or if there is it is bossy and not effective. Team won’t • know what is happening, where to go or what to do. ‘Running around like • headless chickens’. • Key for teams to get points across, to work towards a common goal and • to ensure learning can take place.

  17. Communication How would you use it? Delivering a team talk/ or feedback to team mates Thumbs up or praise a team mate Smiling and clapping Enthusiasm and positive demeanour/words Clear talk and easy to understand sentences Talking to players in a way that will encourage them.

  18. Co-operation What is it? What does it look like? Collaborate: work together on a common enterprise of project People/teams/groups working together to overcome a challenge/obstacle/team Effective communication Teamwork Shared responsibilities

  19. Co-operation What does a team look like without it? Why is it essential? • No teamwork, poor or no communication, no cohesion, arguments or fighting • over the same things. • Teams need to be on the same page and working towards the same goal • otherwise they could cause clash causing more trouble than good in reaching • the goal

  20. Co-operation How would you use it? Working together to achieve common goals Communicating together Helping others Sharing responsibility Treating players fairly Working for good of others not just yourself

  21. Conflict Resolution What is it? What does it look like? Process if seeking a solution to a problem. Generally, five methods are available: (1) problem solving or confrontation, where two parties work together towards a solution of the problem, (2) compromising, where both sides agree such that each wins or loses on certain significant issues, (3) forcing, where the project manager uses his or her power to direct the solution, resulting in a type of win-lose agreement where one side gets its way and the other does not, (4) smoothing, where the major points of agreement are given the most attention and differences between the two sides are not highlighted and are thus not resolved, and (5) withdrawing, where one or both sides withdraw from conflict.

  22. Decision Making What is it? What does it look like? Decision making can be regarded as an outcome of mental processes (cognitive process) leading to the selection of a course of action among several alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice. Ability to recognize obstacles and, through various means, find solutions and alternatives using ingenuity, communication, experience and calculated risks Good leaders seeing problems as challenges to be overcome rather than barriers to be feared A problem being seen as a solution and a victory waiting to happen

  23. Decision Making What does a team look like without it? Why is it essential? • Lack of communication • Arguing amongst team mates • No cohesion, and teams throwing in the towel • One dimensional teams • Improve team cohesion, to fix any problems that occur between players, teams • or problems that arise. To develop strategies to overcome challenges.

  24. Decision Making How would you use it? Video analysis Peer/group coaching/ analysis Team meetings and active discussion of ideas etc. Team building games/sessions Talking to other teams/players/coaches.

  25. Inclusiveness What is it? What does it look like? Creating a hospitable and welcoming environment; interacting with all members of the team without regard to individual characteristics. Interactions between all team members, all involved and treated equally and fairly

  26. Goal Setting What is it? Recognising and setting targets to aim for and achieve What does it look like? Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time lined and evaluated What does a person look like without it? No drive/motivation, just aimless Why is it essential to success? To give them something to strive for, to give them a target.

  27. Motivation Is the drive a person has towards participating and being involved in their physical activity. Motivation determines how much time, energy and effort we put into achieving a task
