  1. TUCK EVERLASTING, by Natalie Babbitt

  2. Winnie is a girl in search of adventure. Living in a fenced in cottage with only her mother and her grandmother, Winnie finds herself restless and bored.

  3. On a hot August day, Winnie makes an announcement to a toad. She tells the toad that she is going to run away the very next day.

  4. That evening a mysterious stranger appears. He won’t say why he is there. He asks a lot of questions.

  5. Winnie sets out on her own. She imagines all sorts of possible things that might happen to her. But nothing prepares her for what actually happens. She never could have dreamed up a magic spring, or Jesse Tuck.

  6. For thousands of years people have searched for ways to cheat death. People all over the world have passed down stories about magic springs, rivers and fountains that give everlasting life.

  7. Ancient Hindu writings tell of a “fountain of youth.”

  8. Ancient Greek and Roman myths tell of a spring of immortality. As early as 2500 B.C. a ruler name Giglamesh ruled the country of Sumeria for 126 years, and he searched all of his life for a way to become immortal.

  9. In 1500, Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon found Florida. One legend says that he was actually looking for a legendary fountain that could restore youth and cure sickness.

  10. Of course, the Fountain of Youth is only a legend. But the idea that magical waters that grant people eternal life have fascinated people from all parts of the world for many centuries.

  11. Reader’s Response Log At the beginning of the novel Winnie is restless and bored. She longs for adventure and excitement. But she is also afraid of the outside world. Describe a time when you have also felt all of those things simultaneously. When you are feeling restless and bored, what do you usually do to relieve those feelings?

  12. Reader’s Response Log Imagine that like Winnie you’ve found a way to live forever. Would you choose to become immortal or stay as you are? Why If you were to become immortal, at what age would you choose to do it? Why?
