OFSTED Definition What is community cohesion? • By community cohesion, we mean working towards a society in which there is a common vision and sense of belonging by all communities; a society in which the diversity of people’s backgrounds and circumstances is appreciated and valued; • A society in which similar life opportunities are available to all; and a society in which strong and positive relationships exist and continue to be developed in the workplace, in schools and in the wider community.

The Duty • Schools to promote community cohesion from (September 07) and be inspected from September 08 • Must be linked to the leadership of the school as it is on the governing body • Linked to the effectiveness of the school’s provision - what it is doing about it (and impact) • The school should not be judged according to the local community,but according to what it is contributing

  11. Many Outstanding schools in Dorset have achieved Rights Respecting Schools Award. www.unicef.org.uk/rrra In weaker schools lack of experience of diverse faiths and cultures in UK was common theme. What makes the difference?
