  3. Objective • SWBAT define theme. • SWBAT identify theme in a vignette.

  4. Homework: your classworkPlease write this down! DUE Tomorrow IF NOT DONE IN CLASS! Read up to page 26 (read through “Louie, His Cousin & His Other Cousin”). Pick one vignette and write 2 short responses about it. • Follow the directions on the handout.

  5. THEME What is theme? Definition: a common thread or repeated idea that is incorporated throughout a literary work -It is a thought or idea the author presents to the reader that may be deep, difficult to understand, or even moralistic

  6. Theme Con’t • Generally, a theme has to be extracted as the reader explores the passages of a work • The theme provides an answer to the question, “What is the work about?” • Unlike plot, which deals with the action of a work, theme concerns itself with a work's message or contains the general idea of a work.

  7. Classwork • With your partner: 1. Read through page 26 (through “Louie, His Cousin, & His Other Cousin”) 2. Pick ONE vignette and write 2 short responses on the handout. • YOU NOW KNOW WHAT I CONSIDER APPROPRIATE FOR END OF THE YEAR RESPONSES. BE DETAILED AND USE TEXT EVIDENCE!
