  3. WHAT IS APPRENTICESHIP (SSA)? • Apprenticeship is work-based trades training combined with post-secondary education • 80% is job based • 20% is classroom based • 2 - 4 years long

  4. SSA REQUIREMENTS • 15 years or older • Attending high school • Working in an apprenticeable trade • Complete application form • Interviewed with parent or guardian

  5. BENEFITS TO STUDENTS • Career Program that gives you the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while still in high school, and to earn high school credits • Part-time work within a trade • Earn money and learn valuable skills while doing a job you love

  6. BENEFITS TO STUDENTS CON’T • Students get the understanding of what work ethic is, skills and safety on the job • Provide direction to the students at an early age

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS CON’T • School Course Credit • Students can use all p/t, weekend and summer work to count towards their apprenticeship. • 120 hours worked = 1 four credit course • course Up to a total of 4 courses (SSA 11A, 11B, 12A, 12B) = 16 credits • 140 different trades • Over 400,000 jobs in the next 10 years

  8. SSA PROGRAM - CHILLIWACK • Involves all secondary schools • We have over 200 registered apprentices in our program • Every thing from carpenter to electrician to dairy production technician

  9. SSA SCHOLARSHIPS • Apprentices can qualify for a $1000 scholarship • Registered in a SSA Program prior to graduation • Graduated with a Gr 12 Dogwood or Adult Dogwood • Completed SSA 11A, 11B, 12A, 12B • Maintained a C+ or better in GR 12 courses • Continue to work for 5 months in a trade, or have worked over 1100 hrs • This year we are awarding 70 Scholarships

  10. Technical Training = ACE-IT Welding • Currently we run an Welding ACE-IT Program at both CSS and SSS • 20 students in welding • Partnership with UFV • ½ of the program is delivered at CSS and SSS • UFV delivers the other ½ • Students will end up with their “C” ticket in welding as well as graduation

  11. ACE-IT - Cooking • We have started an ACE-IT Cooking Program at CSS this fall in conjunction with Cascade Culinary School • Students will be able to earn their Level 1 Cook Training Certificate at high school
