  2. Preface • In the world, there have been many different styles of Government. • In order to appreciate the significance of our form of Government, a basic understanding of other systems needs to be achieved. • This should be a recap for you…… this was on the OGT!!

  3. Monarchies • 2 Types: • Absolute Monarchy • Constitutional Monarchy

  4. Monarchy Part 1 • Absolute Monarchies are characterized by 1 person ruling, controlling all aspects of Government, Law, Economy and Public Life. • Power is passed along Blood Line. • A feudal system of different levels of nobility can be a feature. • Harsh penalties for breaking laws. • A current example is Saudi Arabia.

  5. Monarchy Part 2 • Constitutional Monarchies typically evolve from Absolute Monarchy. • The ruler is mainly a “figurehead”, performing ceremonial duties and ratifying the will of a public or nobility based government body. • The United Kingdom and Japan are modern example of this.

  6. Discussion Question • In the space below, write the following question and answer: • What is a positive aspect of a Absolute Monarchy? What is a negative?

Dictatorship • A Dictatorship is rule by one person or an “elite circle” of military leaders. • Power in a Dictatorship is usually gained by overthrow by the military during a National Emergency situation. • After the military coup, the military carries out the will of the Dictator by controlling the public and controlling elections. • The military is also kept very strong to keep the borders of the country secure and the Dictator in Power. • Current examples are Cuba and North Korea.

Theocracy • Theocracy is rule of a country by a religious leader or religious group. • Religious laws are in place and direct how Government and Society will behave. • Harsh punishments for violating laws. • Little tolerance for outsiders in extreme cases. • A historical example is the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Pilgrims) • A current example is Iran.

  10. Democracy • A Democracy is when the public at large is involved with the creation of government, the selection of government and contributes to the ratification of some laws directly. • 2 Types • Parliamentary • Presidential

  11. Democracy • Parliamentary and Presidential Democracies are characterized by elected representatives working in a multi-branch government. • Representatives express the will of the people. • Government is in place using a Constitution to protect the rights, liberties of citizens. • Rule of Law governs the country. • Canada is an example of a Parliamentary Democracy. • The US is a Presidential Democracy.
