  1. Green Industry Research Focused on the Chesapeake Bay Dr. John Lea-Cox Professor, Research and Extension Specialist Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture University of Maryland, College Park, MD

  2. Maryland:> 350 Nursery and Greenhouse Operations > $450 Million Farm-Gate Value $1.04 Billion Wholesale and Retail (MNLA, 2007)

  3. John Majsztrik – PLSA, PhD (2011) • Developed three predictive water and nutrient use models for • greenhouse, container-nursery and field nursery operations •  Detailed production database gathered from 48 operations

  4. John Majsztrik – PLSA, PhD (2011) • IMPACTS: • Quantified specific fertilization practices and implemented BMP’s • Allowing us to rectify nutrient application discrepancies in the CB model • Move forward on identifying interim BMP’s for inclusion in the CB model

  5. GROUND WATER “Water Management is the Key to Nutrient Management”David S. Ross Plant response Water and Nutrient Uptake Water application Fertilizer weathering Surface runoff sediment / nutrients / water desorption, dissolution, mineralization adsorption, precipitation, immobilization Substrate components Nutrient leaching Jim Owen, 2006

  6. Sensor Networks SCRI-MINDS: Teamsand Working Groups • University of Maryland: • John Lea-Cox (PM, Micro-scale • Modeling – Nursery, Extension Outreach) • Andrew Ristvey, Steven Cohan (Green Roof) • Erik Lichtenberg (Economics – Private Benefits) • Carnegie Mellon: • George Kantor, David Kohanbash • (Next Generation Core Software Development) • UM-Center Environmental Science: • Dennis King (Socio Economics – Public Benefits) • Decagon Devices: • Todd Martin, Colin Campbell • Lauren Bissey • (Next Generation Hardware Development, Core Software) • Colorado State: • Bill Bauerle, Mike Lefsky, Stephanie Kampf • (LIDAR, Hydrology, Macroscale modeling – Nursery) • University of Georgia: • Marc van Iersel, Paul Thomas, John Ruter, Matthew Chappell (Microscale modeling – Greenhouse, Extension and Outreach) • Antir Software: • Richard Bauer • (Crop Modeling Software, • Core Software ) • Cornell: • Taryn Bauerle (Microscale – Root Environments)

  7. nR5-DC Node • IMPACTS: • New Node Development – Integrated with • flow meters and 12V solenoid valves • Allows us to control and measure water • applications in remote fields where there is • NO electrical power 12V DC latching solenoid + 1” valve Flow meter Bleed valve

  8. IMPACT: • Web-Based Interface: Allows us to communicate directly with • sensor nodes from anywhere in the world

  9. IMPACT: • Web-Based Interface: Allows real-time monitoring and adjustment • of irrigation events, using sensor-based or schedule-based control

  10. IMPACT: Documented Water Reductions • Consistently reducing water applications by 50-75% (2-3 fold reduction) • In some cases, documented 95% savings (20-fold reduction) Flow Meter Data Soil Moisture Data

  11. IMPACT: Economic Case-Study  Additional return of $1.06 / ft2 for a nursery grower in the project ($21,200 in total), by improved productivity and reduced loss to root disease.  Return on ($3,000) investment was < 2 months.

  12. Green Roof Program: (Drs. Steven Cohan, Andrew Ristvey) Olyssa Starry (PhD); Whitney Gaches (PhD); Elizabeth Barton (MS) and Clark de Long (MS)  Program is focused on Quantifying Benefits and Measuring Efficiency Combined Sewer Outlets http://www.princetonreview.com/green-honor-roll.aspx http://www.greenroofs.org/

  13. Olyssa Starry (PhD Candidate)  Modeling Stormwater Runoff from Green Roofs

  14. Green Roof Stormwater Model Verification

  15. Potential Impact:  Models can provide urban planners with better metrics to estimate stormwater reductions from reductions in impervious surface. Glyndon, MD (200 acres) • Buildings represent 19% of impervious area • 91% are considered suitable for greening

  16. Urban Programs Gary Felton: Urban Nutrient Management Program Wanda McLachlan: Bay-Wise Program Jon Traunfeld, Ria Molloy: Home and Garden Information Center Master Gardener Programs PSLA Landscape Architecture Faculty: Urban Low Impact Design
